MW Dental’s FAQ’s

Medicine Wheel Dental Center Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicine Wheel Dental accept dental insurance?

Medicine Wheel Dental is known as a fee for service facility/out of network provider. Payment is expected when services are rendered. As a courtesy to our patients who have dental insurance, we submit all dental claims to your insurance company electronically (quickest way available) asking them to send available benefits (payment) to the patient directly. To ensure you are eligible for this type of insurance filing, you will want to make sure that you have “out of network benefits.” By providing these services, Medicine Wheel is able to provide for you our patient directly and not the insurance company. This allows us to spend more time and energy where it matters most, your care! What forms of payment does Medicine Wheel Dental accept?

Medicine Wheel Dental accepts almost all forms of payment. Including:

  • All major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express)
  • HSA (Health Savings Account) Payments
  • Cash
  • Check (with valid proof of identity)
  • Cashier checks
  • Money order
  • Third party payments (with proper written/signed authorization)
  • Care Credit

Does Medicine Wheel Dental offer payment plans?

Payment plans are available through Care Credit Dental Financing. Upon application approval Care Credit offers payment plans with 0% financing for up to 1 year. Or up to 60 months at Care Credit’s current rates.

Are anesthetics still used at Medicine Wheel Dental?

Anesthetics are used when needed with most dental procedures. Please let us know if you are chemically sensitive or in recovery from drug or alcohol dependence as we strive to be “recovery friendly”. Medicine Wheel Dental has the ability to order preservative free anesthetics from a compounding pharmacy for those patients who are highly reactive to the more commonly used anesthetics. Please let us know if you have ever had any reaction to dental anesthetics or other medications in the past. Medicine Wheel Dental also offers the option of Nitrous Oxide (“laughing gas”) for our patients that find themselves apprehensive. In addition to these options, we also have a rescue remedy, desert crisis homeopathic calmer available. The Wellness Center, (adjacent to the Dental office), offers a variety of therapeutic modalities such as Acupuncture, Auricular Therapy, multiple massage modalities, etc., which have been found to have a powerful effect on reducing dental stress and anxiety, pain management along with promoting health and longevity. These services are by appointment and can be scheduled at the Dental office in advance or possibly on a walk in basis if practitioners are available.

Is Medicine Wheel Dental accepting new patients and what does the new patient comprehensive exam include?

Yes, Medicine Wheel Dental is accepting new patients. During the new patient exam you can expect to be in our office for approximately 1.5 hours.

What does the comprehensive exam include:

  • If required, X-rays or oral photos (additional charges may apply)
  • Full oral examination
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Jaw/bite body alignment evaluation

We take the time to conscientiously understand your specific needs, find out what works/doesn’t work for you and very importantly, determine if you have sensitivity to certain materials and substances. Please let us know in advance if you have known chemical sensitivities or are in recovery from alcohol or substance use.

Do I need to have x-rays taken in order to do an examination?

To provide you with a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis, recent dental x-rays are a necessity. Patients are welcome to bring previous x-rays to their appointment.

Medicine Wheel Dental will determine what x-rays are necessary. We do suggest a full mouth set of x-rays (18 individual films) every 3-5 years (depending on the patient and their dental history) with check up bitewings annually (most offices will do every 6 months).

Our protocol and extensive annual examinations ensure that Medicine Wheel is always keeping our patient’s best interests in mind while providing excellence in preventative care.

We offer digital x-rays. Radiation exposure (already low for dental x-rays) is minimal with this new state of the art technology. For the same exposure as two and a half of the four bitewing checkup x-rays done in most offices, we can take a full set of 18 digital x-rays.

At what age will Medicine Wheel Dental see children as patients?

At Medicine Wheel Dental our most important objective for children is that they have a positive dental experience. In the earlier years (1-6 years old) we find that this is usually accomplished by a Pedodontist (pediatric dentist) as they are more equipped for this specific task. Typically we find with children around 7 years old and up, that we are able to assist in their oral treatment needs. However we have found that in certain cases, even children 7 and above still benefit from or require the care of a pediatric dental office. As each situation and patient is different, please contact our office to discuss your specific needs or questions with regard to this.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic Dentistry is an approach to dentistry that promotes health and wellness as a primary concern within the dental field. This approach encompasses both modern science, the foundations of dentistry as well as holistic or integrative understandings. It is sometimes called “Biologic” or “Biocompatible” dentistry. Holistic Dentistry acknowledges and supports the mind, body, and spirit of the patient, not just the “teeth”. Holistic dentistry is partially based on the notion that what affects the mouth affects the entire body, and vice versa. A holistic dentist also works with other practitioners in the holistic healthcare field, thus offering a comprehensive and integrative approach for you and your family. Holistic dentists seek to minimize your exposure to harmful radiation by using equipment with low radiation emissions, limit the number of x-rays taken and use alternative methods for diagnosis and treatment while being up to date in the use of the latest biocompatible restorations and non-toxic dental materials.

Some of the basic principles of our holistic dental health practice are:

  • Avoidance and elimination of toxins from dental materials while using accepted treatment protocols for removing harmful material with as little exposure as possible.
  • Determination of chemical sensitivities and use of bio-compatible or biologic materials
  • Prevention and treatment of dental malocclusion (bite problems=physical imbalance)
  • Prevention and treatment of gum disease at its biological basis; eliminating bacterial exposure to the heart and the bloodstream ‘highway’
  • The early emphasis on immune system support during dental care
  • Microbiological control of infections using effective protocols and natural ingredient
  • “Recovery friendly” for those with alcohol or substance abuse issues

While every holistic dentist will have his/her own approach, beliefs, and techniques to co create overall health and wellness, the primary goal for all holistic dentists is to obtain a better standard of health using your oral care as a gateway. Medicine Wheel Dental looks forward to sharing our unique and comprehensive approach with you.

Should I take supplements prior to mercury filling removal?

In general, unless prior IV Vitamin C chelation is elected, it is best to stop high vitamin and antioxidant intake one (1) day before the mercury removal procedure as these supplements will tend to nullify the effects of anesthetics used for pain elimination. Most biological dentists work in conjunction with physicians on mercury removal protocols. The Dentist or Physician may prescribe specific supplements to take prior to the removal of mercury fillings and the appropriate timetable for doing so. It is imperative that chronically ill patients seek advice from a physician knowledgeable in mercury toxicity issues prior to undergoing any mercury removal procedures.
